Andre Johnson

Dr. Andre L. Johnson is a native Detroiter and nationally recognized leader in prevention, treatment, and recovery services. He is the Founder, President, and CEO of the Detroit Recovery Project, Inc., a pioneering nonprofit organization strengthening Detroit’s recovery community through comprehensive prevention, treatment, and long term recovery support services.
Dr. Johnson has consulted on behalf of the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, working with Ministries of Health in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, Tanzania. His leadership includes federal appointments to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration National Advisory Council in 2015 and again in 2023.
He was appointed by former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and later by U.S. Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use Dr. Miriam E. Delphin Rittmon.
In recognition of his impact, President Barack Obama honored Dr. Johnson as the 2016 White House Champion of Change for Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery.
Dr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Morehouse College, a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix, and a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the Michigan School of Psychology. He has taught Addiction Studies and Health.
