Garvin Deters is the chair of the Sutherland Foundation, a private foundation which supports grassroots, innovative educational initiatives. He is actively engaged in community enhancement projects through both nonprofit and for-profit work. Deters also serves on Souther Environmental Law Center’s Next30 Committee and on the board of Dendrifund, an environmental sustainability foundation. He is a former middle and high school teacher. Originally from Louisville, Deters received his BA in anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his teaching licensure from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He is an avid biker and an advocate for bicyclists.
